How to treat Postpartum Acne

Experiencing acne during and after having a baby is very common for a lot of women.

If you develop acne during pregnancy it will most likely carry on postpartum too.

While your body is going through many hormonal changes with the addition of morning sickness for months and pregnancy cravings wracking havoc on your digestive health no wonder the health of your skin will suffer too.

The most common reasons you are breaking out while pregnant:

Hormonal imbalances: During pregnancy, an increase in the hormone called androgen will increase oil/sebum production in the skin and this excess may lead to congested, clogged pores.

Morning sickness: The first trimester is the most challenging for many women, and because there is no known cause for morning sickness it’s very difficult to eliminate it.
How it affects your skin? Constant nausea and vomiting will disturb your microbiome and create inflammation in your digestive system which will show up on your skin in form of inflamed, red breakouts around the mouth, nose, and cheeks.

Pregnancy cravings: changes in your hormones and your microbiome will determine the cravings you experience daily. While some women are lucky to have increased cravings for more sour and salty foods, many will have extreme sugar cravings and aim for more comfort foods.
How it affects your skin: consuming a high amount of sugar will increase yeast and candida overgrowth in the digestive tract leading to breakouts on the upper face area.

Clearing acne during pregnancy and postpartum is not easy but with the right help we can get your skin back to normal by:

  • Focusing on reducing inflammation in your digestive system. Eating a healthy well-balanced diet will positively benefit both mommy and the baby too. Buy staying away or reducing inflammatory foods such as dairy, high sugar foods, processed foods, and fried foods and replacing them with whole foods, fresh fruits and vegetables, and low sugar snacks and healthy fats such as avocados, nuts, and seeds will help prevent inflammation in your digestive system and reduce your cravings for junk food.
  • Taking natural pregnancy-safe supplements to nourish your body and skin. Besides the recommended general prenatal supplements provided by your physician implementing gut-supporting supplements and nourishing your microbiome is just as important. Pre- and probiotics, increased fiber, Omega 3,6,9 fatty acids, and fermented foods rich in probiotics will promote a healthy gut microbiome and reduce the risk of developing inflammation.

Supplements to support your microbiome during pregnancy: Osmosis Recovery, OmegaVia, Bulletproof Inner Fuel, Osmosis Skin Perfection Elixir.

  • Having gentle acne & pregnancy-safe daily skincare routine to support your skin health. Having a consistent daily skincare routine that will balance your skin and keeps breakouts at bay is essential for acne-prone moms.
